A visit to Ulverston, Cumbria would not be complete without trying some delicious local food and drink. Our little market town has many lovely pubs and Inns but why not try something different? Amigos is the original and currently only Mexican Restaurant in the Southern Lake District. Established in 1997 by two ‘Amigos’ the quaint bar and eatery has become a popular venue for discerning locals and indeed curious tourists!

Ethically produced and wherever possible, locally sourced fresh produce is the key to our continued success and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Zesty vibrant tomato salsas cut from the vine, healthy chunky guacamole laced with jalapeños and fresh lime, sizzling fajitas, sticky pork ribs and the finest fresh steaks you could ask for straight from our butcher over the hill 😉

Intimate dining, family congregations and larger parties are all provided for and every night is indeed different! Our friendly service and relaxed ambiance will make you feel welcome the moment you arrive…

The restaurant

The decor in our street level restaurant radiates warmth and relaxation. The contemporary Mojito and Aztec Chocolate painted walls form a modern canvas displaying traditional Mexican artefacts. Soft lighting, colourful linen cloths and wax crayons for doodling on your table set the stage for both an intimate and fun dining experience.

The 32 cover restaurant comfortably accommodates both cosy couples and larger pre-booked party groups. Our friendly team serve in a refreshingly casual but attentive way offering a relaxed unpretentious experience. Reservations almost always essential, especially at weekends.

The cellar bar

The hub of Amigos is without doubt the bar, situated in the cellar of this fine Georgian building via a small stone stairway. Originally the servants quarters, many features have been retained including the cast iron range, servant bells and huge slate slab floor. Chalkboards, Mexican Artwork, candlelight and vibrant music make it the heart of the building which is the main entrance to Amigos.

Head to the bar, ‘check-in’, order drinks and peruse the quirky menu. Your order will be taken down here and you can relax with your drink until your food is almost ready when you will be shown to your table in the Restaurant.

Our cellar bar is fully licensed so you’re more than welcome to just pop in for a drink! Along with draught San Miguel we offer international bottles beers, fine wines, jugs of Sangria, cheeky cocktails and tasty tequilas!

The courtyard

Open to non-diners and a relatively new addition to our building, the walled courtyard catches the last rays of the evening sunshine and offers a great ‘al fresco’ experience. Contemporary lighting and modern music kick in once the sun goes down so its a great place to congregate either before or after your meal. Outside music events are hosted here so keep your eyes peeled for our next ‘Fiesta’.

Pre-ordering & Deposits

Due to the size of our bijou kitchen, to improve our service to you and more importantly helping us reduce food waste we are requesting a pre-order from the Menu 24hrs prior to booking date (this is compulsory for 6+). A non-refundable deposit of £10/person is also required to eliminate ‘no-shows’! Due when booking a table online or for larger groups via BACS or over the telephone during opening hours with a card payment.

Sorry, we can’t list all ingredients in every dish. Any specific dietary needs? Let us know!
Tables are yours for 1 hour 55 minutes giving us 5 minutes between reservations to thoroughly sanitise tables, chairs, candles and cacti. Please arrive ‘on time’ for your booking to avoid congestion at the arrivals area in the cellar bar. Feel free to come in earlier for pre-drinks in our covered Courtyard.

HOUSE RULES

On-line table bookings are for Restaurant dining only, minimum main courses.
The ‘rule of 6’ applies to all of our indoor space.
Courtyard tables (many undercover and heated) cannot be booked on-line and will be available on a first come, first served basis for ‘drinks only’ though we have a snack menu option during certain times. Our full food menu will not be available outside due to our tiny kitchen limitations.
You cannot book a table in our Cellar Bar for ‘drinks only’ however we may be able to accommodate you at the door on the day.
Please be kind, courteous and patient with our staff. It’s all new to us too and we want you to have the best time with us.

T’s & C’s - PLEASE READ

Amigos is a small independent business and rely on reservations being honoured. For this reason we require a non-refundable deposit of £10/person to secure all bookings - your booking is not confirmed until receipt of the deposit.

Food pre-orders are also required to minimise contact and guarantee choices. Please email all preorders, including dietary requirements, minimum 48hrs beforehand where possible to eat@amigosmexican.com where you will receive an acknowledgment.

Please arrive on time for your reservation as we can only hold your table for 15 minutes. All indoor tables are subject to a 2 hour turn around unless otherwise arranged.

The Amigos story

It started with the meeting of two unique minds, when 2 women (yes women) met on a catering management course in the mid 90’s and were inspired by each others enthusiasm to create from scratch a quirky quality eatery in The Lakes . Excited by a couple of Mexican acquaintances and a fondness for fresh, bold simple flavours and the relaxed way of sharing dishes, Amigos was born.

Our beautiful Georgian building in Ulverston required major renovation and we set to work… This building has soul, and so does our food! The rest is history.
